St. Joseph's Hospital - Case Study

Speaker: Antonio Caro - Fire Protection Engineer, Denver Fire Department

The presentation will include discussion of included fire protection & life safety systems and challenges encountered during system acceptance testing.  The discussion will utilize, as a basis, a presentation deployed to train/orient 40 fire companies with the building (crews located within the 3rd due response area).

St. Joseph's Hospital (Denver, CO) from Conceptualization to Fire Crew Orientation: This is a new 8-story hospital encompassing approximately 1.25 million sqft.  The hospital provides 350 patient rooms and includes 39 surgery rooms.  The project includes an adjacent chapel and a 20,000 sqft central utility plant.  The building includes fire protection systems ranging from smoke control, to preaction & dry sprinklers, standpipe PRV's & foam monitors.  The building poses several hazards to responding firefighters including cryogenic relief areas, a rooftop heliport, medical gas hazardous occupancies, 13,000 V interior substations, etc.

Tony Caro is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park FPE Program, graduating in 1997.  Tony spent the first 11 years of his career in consulting with RJA and Aon, then joined Denver Fire in 2009.
