Presentation:   Fire Safety in Very Tall Buildings and the Revised SFPE Guide

Very tall buildings, because of their highly specialized design requirements and the unusual risks for the occupants created because of the building’s height demand special fire safety considerations. These buildings are being constructed to a variety of regulations, codes and standards, many of which did not contemplate buildings of the heights that were being built. This presentation will discuss issues unique to very tall buildings and how the revised SFPE Engineering Guide on Fire Safety in Very Tall Buildings addresses the topics that affect the performance of tall buildings and their occupants during a fire. Topics to be discussed will include egress and evacuation, emergency access, communications/situation awareness, fire resistance/resiliency, unique features, and facades.

Guest Presenter: Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE

Chris is the Technical Director at SFPE and the Technical Editor of SFPEs Fire Protection Engineering magazine. He is also an Associate Editor for Fire Technology Journal and Editor-in-Chief for the 6th edition of the SFPE Handbook. Chris has a Bachelor of Science degree in fire protection engineering and a Master’s in management from the University of Maryland. He is an SFPE Fellow and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in its inaugural year from the University of Maryland’s Department of Fire Protection Engineering.
