Presentation: History of and Current State of Smoke Control in the US

This presentation will provide a broad overview of the evolution of smoke control via the NFPA and IBC codes, discuss the life safety goals of smoke control then and now, and discuss some of the challenges existing smoke control systems produce.

Guest Presenter: Sean Donohue, PE, P. Eng, FSFPE

Sean Donohue is a registered fire protection engineer with experience working primarily in the western United States and Canada. Throughout his career, Sean has been involved with the application, interpretation, and enforcement of building and fire codes and standards including those published by the International Code Council, the National Fire Protection Association and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He has worked closely with architects, engineers, contractors, attorneys, and owners to ensure public safety and code compliance for a wide range of building construction projects with a focus on commercial development. Notable sectors include government, healthcare, industrial, hospitality and large assembly. Sean's experience includes a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of design and installation of fire protection systems including fire suppression, detection and alarm, and smoke control; Sean also has experience with and a firm grasp on compliance options for fire-resistance rated construction, hazardous materials, building code design, fire code, and life-safety design.

Sean became a SFPE Fellow in 2020 and was awarded the SFPE Harold E. Nelson Service Award in 2022.
